In a move that will serve as a counterpoint to that perception, the New York-based WeWork on Thursday said it would open a second headquarters in an iconic building in the heart of tech-land - in San Francisco’s new Salesforce Tower. It grew to become one of San Francisco’s largest tenants by signing long-term leases and renting out desks by the month to entrepreneurs and larger companies.The knock on WeWork, the $20 billion startup that offers sleek communal office space, has long been that it isn’t a true tech company, critics say. WeWork had grown exponentially in the Bay Area, roughly doubling its office holdings each year while being fueled by billions of dollars of investment by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank. On Saturday, it named real estate veteran Sandeep Mathrani, the former retail chief at Brookfield Properties, as its new CEO. ![]() WeWork laid off 169 employees in San Francisco as part of a global downsizing of 2,400 employees last year and cut back on its expansion after scrapping its initial public offering. “Salesforce Tower is a crown jewel of San Francisco’s skyline and through this offering, we are doing what we do best - providing access to beautifully designed and innovative spaces for companies of all sizes,” Elton Kwok, WeWork’s Northern California general manager, said in a statement. The company confirmed it is relocating employees to a new corporate office at 600 California St., a Financial District tower that it bought for $322 million last year.
